(a brief q&a with cubeman selekta a polish dj now living and working in Limerick. Cubeman played his first gig here warming up for Rootical Soundsystem at the October Roots night- Shane)
When did you get involved in the the reggae scene?
Couple of years ago I started playing guitar in few reggae & ska
bands from my home town in Poland. But it wasn't good enough. In the
beggining of 2005 I bought my first turntables and started to play
jamaican music as Cubeman Selekta. I got seriously involved with polish
reggae scene when i met dj Scoobie from Radio Sensi Sound System. From
that moment we played together on reggae parties and festivals. In the
end of January 2006 Radio Sensi has split and I became a member
of No Duck Crew, which is a group of DJs, sound systems and artists who
are againts polish president and prime minister (we call them "ducks").
In april i came to Limerick and after few months i was lucky enough to
take part in the last Roots Night in the Boat Club.
What is the reggae scene like in Poland?
The first polish reggae bands existed in the 80's. Nowadays the whole
scene (bands, sound systems, DJs etc.) is very developed. Jamaican
music is getting more and more popular, and polish reggae, dancehall,
dub is getting more sophisticated. Once a year sound clash takes place,
and few times a year there are some big reggae festivals with such
bands as Zion Train, Dub Syndicate, Twinkle Brothers, Lee Perry and
much more. Moreover, some of polish reggae sound systems or bands are
recognisable abroad.
What do you like most about Limerick?
