A mellow start crowd wise to the Broken funk /Cheebah monthly club bash but this didn't detract from the Mek show which held the attention for a couple of reasons. One, hes serrattoed up and scrolling his computer towards what undoubtedly will be his way forward dj wise if we take on board tonights second reason which involves showcasing sets of his own productions along side his ragga /electro constants.
Battling against a projection of his dmc glories that by fluke I found on dvd and threw up, mek pulled out the classic electro jams. Some of these that he had been listening to for 20 years were now re-stretched over a new canvas as the image of him on RTE's long forgotten jo-maxi kids programme flickered over cloth alongside the dj booth. He remixed Hijacks classic ‘walls of jerhico’ over the fools gold beat and doubled them for double impact. Dope as this was it was nothing to the sonic clank of doubling up some squeezebox sample from an un named Co Clare player called up for raggabeat duties later on.This is the new stuff that hes working on a major Uk singer and the results so far are measured tuff beats over swampy celtic strains and clipped metal guitar stabs, some of it sounding comfortably on he right side of the Prodigys take on punkified hiphop. One massively familiar postpunk vocal sample signaled a bonified future hit record however and whenever it comes out .
He didnt plan on rolling these teasers out tonight but judging by the floors reaction it was a proper call. Instant dubplates from ones own soundsystem! This will be a scenario to keep an eye on from the man with a plan.
