now i'm not a superstitious person but the last time i was in a county final i wrote a post about my top ten tunes, what i was reading etc. so since we are back in the county final this saturday for the first time in three years i don't see any harm in doing another cúlbaire cool tunes post, so here goes....

the roots - how i got over: there were rumours that the roots, after becoming house band for jimmy fallon were taking time out from recording but one year on they are back. this is the first 12" and the title track of the new album, etched vinyl too!

got given an mp3 of this track last november while in l.a. on holiday and it is still my favourite shafiq track from his new album despite strong competition from the fatima track...

tawiah was one of the first singers that i contacted when i started the block radio show about getting some of her material, this is one of her strongest vocals yet...
 
gp havana cultura band - think twice
gilles went to cuba during the summer to executive produce an album with roberto fonseca and the cream of cuban hip hop. this is their tribute to jaydee...

taken from his forthcoming album 'butter', heaviest drums he has ever produced...

Top 5 for the summer

1) Sin Palabras - Salsita
Beautiful latin voice over some salsa with beats and electronics. Salsa meets technology. This tune featured on Latin Groove, one of the much acclaimed Putumayo World Music Compilations

2) Le Peuple de l'Herbe feat. UKApache - No Escape
Massive jungle tune by one of the best french live bands of the moment, featuring UK Apache, who collaborated with Nicolette, on vocals.

3) Tanya Stephens - It's a pity (Doctor's Darling Riddim)
Probably the best jamaican voice of the last decade, the very soulful Tanya Stephens released this huge hit on this very popular riddim produced in Germany by Dr Ring Ding.

4) Jim Murple Memorial - Sampson
Jim Murple Memorial is a revival of the R’n’B/Rocksteady that could be heard in the Carribean Islands in the early 50s. Their music sounds like it was composed at the time, giving it a very original sound.

5) Zion Train feat. YT - Life that I Choose
Zion Train is probably the biggest dub act in UK and visited Limerick earlier this year. The tune features YT, an MC from London that collaborated with Morgan Heritage, Bounty Killer and Tanya Stephens to name a few.

2006-Bring it on

Well as I missed the boat for lists here are some of the things I hope to see more of in 2006.

Good New Arts Locations: Impact was a great addition to Limerick showing challenging theatre and used well as an exhibition space. Hopefully it will grow even stronger in 06. I was a little cynical about the new daghdha space in Johns Square but having been and heard the tremendous buzz around about the mamuska nights- I’m sold and look forward to checking out other stuff there. Also the possibility that we will see a new art house cinema in the Theatre Royal building is great although this story has been out there before so we will have to wait and see I suppose.

Gigs: Coffee and Cream in Impact was uplifting and hopefully it will be the first of many contributions from Limerick’s new communities. While DeLorean Suite’s set at BudRising Limerick in November bodes very well for their progress in 2006. Check their site for news on hometown gigs in the first quarter of this year. My favourite nights in 2005 however were our two with vinyl and nu killa crew in Dolans. Three rooms is the way to go, great atmosphere and excellent variety. Hopefully we will see more of Access all Areas in the future. Here is Harry from Rootical on paddys eve in Dolans. More shots from Dolans (sugarhill, tu-ki, gc underground etc) here.

Red Flags: It was funny to see the Red Flag hoisted over King Johns Castle this year. A tourist board spokeperson said it was because it was a strong colour but I liked to see the irony in it being hoisted less than 100 yards away from the plaque commemorating the Limerick Soviet and across the road from the building which once housed Limerick’s infamous Maoist Bookstore in the early 70s. Politically it was a year when we got to see people feeling that they could stand up and make a difference with the Rossport Five and the Irish Ferries march being particularly memorable. Radio: The Bottom Dogs article from earlier in the year pointed out much of the good stuff on conventional radio but I have also been delighted with the range on internet and digital. Billy Jams and exile eye’s supreme void shows are how all radio should sound: passionately delivered and with surprises a plenty. It has also been nice to finish up the weekend with Rodigan on Kiss. Television, well I might start watching more of it if we could have more of these type of quality shows!

I got into hiphop and reggae from tapes of his shows and remember him playing mantronix before a tape of a session in a pub in kerry in 1986. With his death a whole attitude died as well according to sheila peel . What if archives of all his shows could be webcast on a dedicated station?? That would be good!

Two music related political moments that stood out.
Geldof still going on about doing everyone a favour by not incuding african bands on the main live 8 stage.  Surely the attitude of marginilisation that perpetrates
the"them and us'' aid mentality is worthy of debate.
Placing Elton john and pete moss for conscience raisement over anything from Africa was first world perfection as we stand today.
On a smaller stage ... The limerick event guide "interviewed" a "top" dublin dj in this weeks issue. They couldnt print the name of his villan of the year as the dj remarked that a similar answer by "someone else" prevented them entry to the usa when Bushs stormtroopers read it! ...Dougal!!! Dreams!.. Reality!!

The women of Hospital Family Resource Centre Drama Group, improvisation and courage I've yet to meet anywhere, living theatre in rural Limerick every Friday morning.

Camper Eco Friendly Shoes, mine are pink rubber, some people say they look like diver's shoes, they take 3 actions to manufacture, typically shoes take 60 or more, uber cool.



Big swim in the rain at Lahinch, Co. Clare in August, was so battered by waves I kept losing the location of the 11 year old I was taking care of, followed closely by swim in Barcelona in November in much polluted Mediterranean sea, there were drink cans and cigarette butts swimming with me but any swim in November is memorable right?

Sarah Kane's "Cleansed" in the Arcola Theatre, Dalston, London  where there were erections and practical live sex, the dinner talk afterwards went on for days. 

The funiculare that takes you from new city to old city in Bergamo, Italy, I was so excited it felt like a bungee jump. (But of course I'd never do a bungee jump)

Gigs of the Year:

Once we’ve been knocked out of the football county championship a trip abroad is always on the cards to drown the sorrows. This year berlin was the destination and delorean suite the band to see in that small jazz café on a street whose name I cannot remember. After seeing the sound check that afternoon the expectations were high and they didn’t disappoint.

More gigs from them in the new year all going well.

When Saul Williams came to play Dublin towards the end of the summer I was probably on my bicycle making up the three miles from my house to the gaa field of dreams back in kerry preparing for a do or die match. By the time he made his return in late November I was also on my bicycle clocking up the miles on the trip home from hatch st to south circular road and I passed by him getting out of a taxi just outside the pod. So things augured well. The gig itself was brilliant except for some French dude who kept dancing on my toes and took phone calls in the middle of some of the poems…word up to ophelia for an excellent warm up.

Films:

2046 (visually one of the most beautiful films I’ve ever seen, wanted to go back and watch it again without reading the subtitles but never got around to it)

Downfall (scene in which eva braun insists that everyone in the bunker gets up and dances at her party even though berlin is crumbling with bombs been dropped outside is the strangest thing I’ve ever seen)

Maria full of grace (difficult film to stomach,have never looked at a grape the same way since)

The life aquatic with steve zissou (bill murray is a legend)

Radio Documentary:

Documentary on the aurora borealis on lyric fm was half an hour of pure bliss. Have always wanted to see the northern lights but can’t afford to for the time being. Hearing the noise that it makes as it passes through space in the comfort of my bedroom was the next best thing though.

Disappointment of the Year:

Losing that aforementioned do or die match to st senans. Also, returning to my bicycle after a night of beer and dancing and seeing that someone had twisted the back wheel of my bike, would love to dance on his head if I got the chance.
