All good things come to an end...

... sadly, the last ever ‘Nu Killa Beats’ Drum & Bass night will be on Saturday March 6th at the Underground, Baker Place. Comfortably the longest running club night in Limerick there have been some legendary nights over the last 10 years since the first gig at the Dog House (now The Cornstore) on Thomas St in February 2000. It was the first dedicated night for Drum & Bass in Limerick and brought a style of music to the attention of clubbers who had previously been unaware of it’s existence.

Over the years the night won a hardcore following and even attracted visitors from other towns and cities across the country as well as the UK. Local Dj’s have been the mainstay of the night but there have been many guest Dj’s and performers from around the country as well as abroad.

The promoters, better known as the ‘Nu Killa Kru’ are determined that the last night will a celebration more than anything else and will be signing off in style with all the resident Dj’s pencilled in for one last knees-up! Local Dj’s Code, Bee, Roller T, Deep Cut, Mecca, Lymer, Cain and Leon will be joined by Waterford’s Iree MC for the special occasion. SATURDAY - MARCH 6th @ the Underground, Baker Place, Limerick Doors 10pm till 2:30am Admission €8. Line up : Code, Bee, Roller T, Mecca, Deep Cut, Lymer, Cain, Leon, Iree MC

RiRa live this Friday night, February 12th, for free! in baker place as part of their birthday celebrations. Ri-Ra is a rap vetern in the truest sense of the word. A Tullamore B-Boy since back in the day, his name is known all over the world for being one of the most relevant and lyrically gifted wordsmiths around. As part of ScaryEire, he recorded tracks like 'Dole Q', 'Rev It Up' and '10 Victories' which presented a true Irish hiphop sound that has yet to be rivalled 15 years later. Following on from collaborations with Sinead O'Connor, Adrian Sherwood and Tricky, his solo output of releases including 'Front Bar' and 25 O'Clock in the Morning' became homegrown anthems up and down the country and beyond. Last year saw the release of his debut album, 'Horses Work For Donkey Wages', a banger-infused collection of some the realest rhymes and dirty beats released all year. Ireland's most respected hiphop hero makes his first visit to Limerick in many moons to help celebrate Baker Place's 10th anniversary on Friday February 12th with a free live performance in the Underground.

As seen on Shimmy Marcus's youtube channel, this rare footage of a promo video for tourism to Ireland shown during tv coverage of Ali fight in USA. That is Limerick playing in the hurling. 1972, the last time winning an all-ireland was just around the corner.

Master tape of the Universe

 

Each week I flick through the Video tapes in second hand Limerick shops, often ending up with peoples TV compilations on Maxell or Bush tapes that i end up fast forwarding, shifting analogue chunks from someones attic. Its all history. Today in Oxfam a BBC copy of Midnight Movie, Dennis Potters last film, but even better, Shimmy Marcus's film from 2000, ‘Aidan Walsh – Master of the Universe’! Both  pristine and mine for 3 euros. I was aware of the Walsh film but had never actually seen it so once home it was first into the deck.

Walsh had  all the trappings of a 15 min Superstar when I lived in a battered Dublin in the 80s .The Temple bar glimpsed in parts of this tape brought back memories of crossing traffic light streets on many a nights wander from East Wall to Rathmines. Often in the City centre one would come across some sort of performance spilling from the Project Arts centre. Events such as the 24 hour continuous Art and Music ‘Dark Space’ gig where the likes of The Virgin Prunes shared room with Nigel Rolfe and other performers. Amongst the clusters of painted leather jackets congregating on the cobblestones on these nights one would occasionally see the ever smiling Aidan Walsh .

Unfringed 10

Unfringed festival kicked off on Wednesday. Running up till Sunday the programme is a bit pared back compared to other years. However on the plus side, this means that it is possible to see everything and with all tickets been just a 10 euro, it is excellent value. Baz Kennedy has good review of a number of productions over here.

As I was reminded though on Wednesday night by one of the organisers, there was no 'offensive' rappers, this year. The man who caused the greatest walkout ever in Unfringed history back in 08 was pobz not Naillerz who got most of the limelight. So in recognition here is Pobz, with the first female rapper that I can remember out of Limerick

Weeshie

An appropriate follow up to our Donal Dineen radio piece comes from a fellow Kingdom man. Weeshie Fogarty, has been  the stalwart commentator on Radio Kerry for all Gaelic Football matches. He also presents Terrace Talk a weekly magazine style show. While his knowledge of the green and gold would be exemplary, he may not be that hot on r'n'b as this clip illustrates.
